I was very fortunate in terms of the weather, and I suspect I used a red filter as well. That would reduce the haze and also increase contrast – shadows being mainly illuminated by blue skylight, they are more darkened by a red filter than areas in full sunlight.
I remember when I was setting up for the Loch Etive pier photos, a helpful bystander let me know that my tripod wasn’t level. I don’t usually worry about the tripod, leaving the leveling operations to the three way head and how things actually appear on the ground glass.
